Cold Weather Shelter Training in both Burlington and Rutland @ Burlington and Rutland Methodist Churches

Currently approximately 500 emergency shelter beds and 250 transitional beds for Vermonters experiencing homeless are provided by Agency of Human Services. When these local programs are full, the Department augments this grant-funded capacity with motel vouchers.  When extremely cold winter weather coincides with tourism events, Vermont’s largest communities could potentially run out of both shelter, transitional and motel beds, precipitating the need for additional shelter capacity, even in the absence of a declared disaster. Therefore, requiring additional shelter(s) be set up in the higher population areas of Burlington and Rutland.

When these conditions occur…

Burlington

CVOEO (Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity) will set-up and be the shelter manager for a 25 bed shelter at Burlington First United Methodist Church at 21 Buell St, Burlington, VT 05401

Rutland

BROC-Community Action in Southwestern Vermont will set-up and be the shelter manager for a 25 bed shelter. Training for this event is at BROC 45 Union Street  Rutland, VT 05701.

Medical Reserve Corps members are needed to assist with staffing these shelters.  Please join us December 8th at 1pm to 4pm at the Burlington or Rutland church location above for a training and walk through set-up of the cold weather shelters.  Additionally from 3pm to 4pm will be a crash-course Mental Health First Aid / Situation De-Escalation Training covering working with the population being served.

Please RSVP and see you on December 8th!
